California College Promise GRANT Benefits & Eligibility

The Promise Grant is an income-based program. It covers the fees associated with attending community college for lower-income students. Qualified students are eligible no matter how many units they take per semester.

CCP GRANT Eligibility

These are the GRANT requirements:

  1. Must be a California resident or AB 540 eligible student
  2. Must be attending or planning to attend a California community college
  3. Must show financial need (lower income)

California College Promise PROGRAM Benefits & Eligibility

The Promise PROGRAM provides free community college tuition for two years. This is not an income-based program. You do NOT have to be lower-income to qualify.

CCP PROGRAM Eligibility

Here are the PROGRAM requirements:

  1. Must be a California resident or AB 540 eligible student
  2. Must be attending or planning to attend a California community college for the FIRST TIME
  3. Must be a full-time California community college student (12+ units per semester)

How to Apply for Promise Funds

To apply for the grant or the program, simply complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA online. If you’re a DREAMer, complete the California Dream Act Application or CADAA online instead.

Once you apply for the FAFSA, you will automatically be added to any and all programs and grants you qualify for at the time. You must apply each school year to re-qualify.

Please note that the Promise Program pays for two years of community college if an institution chooses to waive fees. Each individual community college has the option to waive enrollment fees. Some do not.

So, be sure to check with the school you want to attend first. Ask if they waive tuition through the Promise Program before you enroll to ensure you get free tuition.
